Bricks have been used to build religious structures for nearly 10,000 years due to their great strength. Here are three of the most famous brick churches ever built.

St. Mary’s Basilica, Gdansk, Poland

One of the largest brick churches in the world, and one of the largest brick structures in Europe, St. Mary’s is a sight to behold. Construction began in 1379 and wasn’t completed until 1502. After World War II, the church was restored and elevated to the status of basilica by the Pope.

St. Martin’s Church, Landshut, Germany

At 428 feet high, the tower of St. Martin’s in Landshut is the tallest brick structure in the world. It also houses one of the largest crucifixes in Europe. The tower alone took 55 years to build, while the whole church took over a century.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City, USA

Unlike the other buildings on this list, St. Patrick’s is not made of exposed red brick but with brick clad in marble, giving it a whitish appearance. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and it stands as an icon of old New York in the middle of modern Manhattan.
